By no means do all attempts at revision succeed as revisions; some fail, and the status quo remains; others succeed and the tradition remains intact but changed; others fail as revisions but lead to greater changes, even the founding of new groups within a broader tradition. In this chapter, I will focus first on an example where an appeal to charismatic authority as the rationale for revision of an existing tradition might not be readily expected: the Church of Satan.
