Description
-
New and minority religions are particularly fertile grounds for examining how charismatically authorised attempts at revision of existing traditions are made, evaluated, and acted upon. By no means do all attempts at revision succeed as revisions; some fail, and the status quo remains; others succeed and the tradition remains intact but changed; others fail as revisions but lead to greater changes, even the founding of new groups within a broader tradition. In this chapter, I will focus first on an example where an appeal to charismatic authority as the rationale for revision of an existing tradition might not be readily expected: the Church of Satan.
